THIS IS THE UPCOMMING RESTORE DESCRIPTION. A CONCEPTUAL PAPER. Note that you will need Poseidon for this! Poseidon currently does not exist, as I am working on it. Assumptions: dial-up.provider.at.eu is your location in Europe. this.computer.is.ko.us is the computer located in America. scylla-charybdis.ok.au is the backup server located in Australia. You don't want to fly to America nor Australia to get the restore done. All you have are some "remote hands" at both locations. Prerequisites: 1) (See README.backup for more information how to get this:) 1a) You have the backup of this.computer.is.ko.us done with S&C 1b) The backup image is stored /somewhere in scylla-charybdis.ok.au 1b) The backup contains the output of "odysseus / >/tmp/ody.out" 1c) The backup and the run of odysseus are near time. 2) (You can download a Knoppix ISO image at http://www.knoppix.de/ ) 2a) this.computer.is.ko.us was booted with Knoppix from CD-ROM. 2b) The Knoppix Networking was enabled (perhaps by the remote hands) 2c) SSH-Server was started on this.computer.is.ko.us 2d) You can successfully do a ssh knoppix@this.computer.is.ko.us 2e) You have a command shell on scylla-charybdis.ok.au 2f) scylla-charybdis.ok.au can reach this.computer.is.ko.us via Internet 3) You have all tools in place 3a) There is a precompiled scylla runnable under Knoppix 3b) You have a scylla.pem to make SSL work 3c) scylla-charybdis.ok.au has all S&C-tools reachable in PATH 3d) You know how to use your brain Process description for the lazy admin: Shell 1: scp `which poseidon scylla` /etc/scylla.pem knoppix@this.computer.is.ko.us: ssh knoppix@this.computer.is.ko.us su - fdisk # partition your drives mke2fs -j /dev/hda1 # Be sure the drives have the capacity to take the backup mkdir /restore mount /dev/hda1 /restore # mount all your drive structure under the temporary "root" /restore screen tcpserver -a 999 /home/knoppix/scylla /restore PASSWORD /home/knoppix/scylla.pem & Shell 2: ssh scylla-charybdis.ok.au cd /somewhere screen # Let poseidon dump the working file list poseidon tmp/ody.out | while ! charybdis this.computer.is.ko.us 999 PASSWORD - do sleep 1 done Now wait until all data is transferred. This can take quite some time. If some timeout error occurs while running charybdis, just restart the last commando (lines from posseidon.. to ..done) a couple of times until nothing is transferred any more. Then do following: Shell 1: cd /restore # Let poseidon create all non-regular files /home/knoppix/poseidon -y tmp/ody.out # Now all you have to do is to reconfigure your bootloader # If the filesystem layout has changed be sure to # edit /restore/etc/fstab prior to following: chroot /restore /sbin/lilo reboot Before doing the last step pay close attention to what posseidon said. There might be some files missing or be out of sync with the output of odysseus. Fix this manually. It might be that you can as well use a RedHat install floppy to get the restore done, however tcpserver is missing there, so you need some more binaries to get this ready. Note that I already have plans to create a minimum rescue system which will support S&C, off course. It will provide an on demand created minimal floppy image for any system configuration (such no more missing modules), which will then download the rest via internet, and alternatively it will fit completely on either an USB stick or a "business card style CD-ROM". Note that there are no more basic steps you need to do as seen above. The only thing you need to know is how to setup the filesystems. If you don't know how to do this, S&C probably is not for you (yet). S&C is thought as "the easy way to backup your server keeping full control about everything but don't bother about any data transport". It's only suited for admins who know what they are doing and want to be at charge, always. Like me ;) -Tino PS: scylla, charybdis, odysseus all have a y. poseidon has -y ;)
